THE UPWARD HAWKS FINISH UNDEFEATED VS THE PACERS

Blake and the Upward Hawks finished the 2009/2010 basketball season without a loss! It truly was a special season for a special group of boys, each with talents and strengths that complemented the other. And most importantly, the team DID NOT have a showboat or ball hog. EVERY boy on the team moved the ball unselfishly and the undefeated season can easily be attributed to that fact.

The Pacers were short a few players and only had five players show, so each of their players played the entire game. This actually gave the Pacers a slight advantage because their A and B players stayed in the entire game while the Hawks A and B players were rotated out for the other boys to play. The Hawks played strong however.

Going into the half, the Hawks only lead by 5 points. The Pacers played a zone and their big man played right under the goal and made it difficult for any of the Hawks to get close to the basket. Adjustments were made during half time and the Hawks really lit up the boards after that. All the Hawks players got good looks at the basket, one of which was Austin Pierce, the high scorer of the day.

The Hawks executed their plays and set some good screens which allowed open lanes to the basket. Austin Pierce, Bryant Wilkerson, Lee Nuspl, Austin Yerby, and Blake Ander drove hard to the basket, each scoring at will.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Hawks literally slowed the Pacers to a crawl. Despite the Pacers camping their big man out under the goal, they scored only a handful of baskets the entire game. As they had all season, the Hawks stifling defense shut down the Pacers before they could even get to the lane. Several turnovers and jump balls allowed the Hawks to control the pace of the entire game. Jared Snyder, Justin Slaughter, and Emmanuel Lodree came up with big defensive plays by blocking shots, getting great steals, and simply shutting down their assigned players.

The entire team played great all season and showed some great sportsmanship and respect for each other and their opponents. Coaches Mitch Yerby and Matt Ander were extremely proud of the team and plan to claim responsibility for each players success when they sign lucrative NBA contracts someday!
